Filling out a college application is an important part of the admission process. Some points that students must remember before doing the application forms are that they are not completed solely by the students. These forms need at least one recommendation from a teacher, counselor or other adult and official copies of test scores need to be sent to the college from the testing authority. Also, students must remember that they must allow enough time to the other people involved in the process to carry out their work and they must have enough time to review the forms to make sure all information and documents are included and submit it to the college by mail before the deadline.

Steps to Fill Out College Application Form

The general steps to start filling out a college application form include writing clearly and using block letters, keeping a photocopy of the application and sending it to the proper address. There are other important sections in a college application form that are to be filled out by the candidate.

1. Usually, the first section comprises of the personal information. Personal information includes the student’s name, place of birth and nationality, mailing and permanent addresses (when the two are different) and e-mail address.

2. The next section generally covers the major for which you wish to get admission. This can only include the subjects taught in the university. You need to include which session you want to start (summer, fall or spring).

3. The next section covers your educational details. If you are enrolled in any college or university program, you need to include it in the application form. Also the last college and degree program you have been enrolled in must be included in the application form as well as if you have received any diploma or certificate and honors you have received.

4. If you have a nationality that is not American, a member of the European Union or European Economic Area, you must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 points (on the paper version) or 213 points (on the computer version).

5. The next requirement is the application essay. You need to write it on a separate sheet of paper. This essay often requests that you state the reasons you have chosen your desired program but some schools will give a list of topics that you can choose from. Generally, the essay is supposed to be 800-1200 words.

6. The following section covers the letters of recommendation which must be included with the application form.

7. The last section is the signature. You must not forget to sign your application and put the proper date on it.

The admission process is not easy and involves handling quite a large number of responsibilities. Among these responsibilities lies an important one: writing the college Application Letter. This letter has to impress the admissions council and improve your chances to get admission in college. Writing a college application letter involves detailing your dreams and talents. It can also be considered an exchange of ideas between you and your future place of study.

Writing Early

You need to start writing early because the sooner you start, the more chances you have to make corrections and add specific details to boost your credibility. The application letter is the key to get admission in a reputable college. This letter should be impressive enough to influence the reviewer and let you get selected for an interview.

Interest in the College

When you are writing the college application letter, you must write statements that will describe the reasons you have chosen that particular college. Do not be unnecessarily wordy. Rather state honestly which factors attracted you the most and helped you choose the college. Admission officials are highly intellectual and will catch on to your level of interest through the application letter. There should not be redundant information in the application letter as it will make the application letter lengthy and uninteresting.

Interest and Hobbies

As you are seeking admission in an educational institution it is not necessary to reflect all your educational interests in your application letter. If you are interested in fields other than academic ones, you must refer to them in your college application. If the college has a good theater group or sports team and you are interested in these fields you can include them also. Write about your hobbies and your interest in doing social improvement. These will be added advantages and smooth your chances of getting admission.

Uniqueness of the Application

As there are a number of applications for admission officials to check, they usually search for the uniqueness of the application. For that you can seek help from your counselor. The college will want to know how you are going to prove yourself beneficial for the college. You need to state these points explicitly; include your all of your strengths and none of your weaknesses. You might include a special feature of yours and how that can be what the college needs. You may be a good candidate but you must remember that there will be thousands of students applying like you. So, your main concern must be in making your college application completely unique.

2. Know the company

3. Your Job History

4. Know the Questions

Writing application letters

The job application letter's sole purpose is to get the recipient to read your CV. It should be clear, concise and straight to the point. Here you are simply telling the employer that you are worth having a look at.
The application letter should be brief, no more than one page in length. It should be easy to read and flow through. It should include only the absolute necessary information. Like most other things, there is a formula that works extremely well for preparing job application letters. Following we discuss each paragraph and give you some guidelines.

Addressing job application letters:
The style you choose is not important, there are many different styles of job applications and professional letters, this comes down to personal preference. However somewhere on the top, whether it is on the right or left hand sides, there should be your address and the date. Following this, on the left hand side you should address it. Ensure you include the name of the person, their title, company name, address and any position reference number. This is probably obvious, but ensure that you spell their name correctly, nothing worse than receiving a letter incorrectly addressed or misspelled. It gives a poor first impression.

The Introductory Paragraph:
The first paragraph should simply state why you are writing to them. If it is an advertised position, mention the position title and where it was advertised. If you are "cold calling" a company then you should specify that you are applying for any current or future employment opportunities.
An easy way to start this paragraph is with the following statement: " Please find enclosed my CV, which I am forwarding to you as an application for the position of......."

The main body of job application letters:
The main body of the letter should be two to three paragraphs at the most. Here is where you tell them what you have to offer and why they should read your CV. This is a good time to read the job advertisement again. In one paragraph (two at the most) you need to summarise your experience and skills, at the same time, you need to respond to the position requirements as per the advertisement.
Analyse your career and summarise it in a few sentences, highlight what you specialise in, or how many years in the industry you might have, or even the level that you have reached. This paragraph should direct the reader to your CV and should sell you on some unique points that you might have.
A good way to start this paragraph is with a statement like this: "You will see from my enclosed CV...." then go ahead and tell them something about your career which will immediately get their interest.
The next part of the body of the letter should be a brief description of your personal skills. Again read the advertisement and respond to their needs. If they are asking for someone with good co-ordination skills, then ensure you mention something to that effect. If it is communication or perhaps leadership skills they value, then tell them that you have these. Use adjectives like "demonstrated ability", "well developed", "strong".

Job Application Letters Closing Paragraph:
The closing paragraph should ask for some action from the recipient. This is where you ask for an interview. It should also state where and how they can reach you, and it should thank the recipient for giving you the opportunity to apply. You can include things like "should you require further information....." .

Finish the letter by adding a closing remark, either "yours sincerely", "yours faithfully' or whatever you feel comfortable with and obeying general letter writing etiquette. Leave a few spaces for your signature and then place your full name.

Before you mail the application letter, read it over again, making sure that it is perfect. Special attention should be placed to ensure the letter:

It is not too long.
There are no grammar or spelling errors.
That you have answered the job requirements.
The application letter flows and is easy to read.

You might have to type and edit the letter many times before you are happy with it, but just remember that the job application letter is just as important as the CV itself. The letter should invite the recipient to read the resume, in turn the resume should raise enough interest for them to want to interview you. The Interview is where you will demonstrate your skills and abilities.
